Matter, explained for homeowners: what it fixes, what it doesn’t, and when to call a pro
Your thermostat is in one app, your locks in another, and the speaker in the kitchen only understands half of it. Matter is the industry’s bet on making devices work across Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung. In 2026 it works — unevenly.
What Matter is
Matter is an open smart-home standard run by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), the group that includes Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung among its members[csa]. The idea: a device with the Matter badge can be set up once and controlled from any Matter-capable platform, mostly over your local network rather than through a vendor’s cloud. Devices talk over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread (a low-power radio mesh that needs a “border router” such as a recent hub or speaker).
What changed recently: Matter 1.6
The CSA announced Matter 1.6 at its Unify event in June 2026. The spec’s headline themes are simpler setup, multi-ecosystem experiences through a feature called Joint Fabric (one home network that any Matter platform can control), and more context-aware control[csa16][verge]. The catch is timing: the spec runs ahead of the platforms. At announcement, The Verge reported that Apple, Google and Amazon were still essentially on Matter 1.3[verge], and an independent status review in January 2026 found many ecosystems at 1.2/1.3 in practice, with the Thread Group now certifying new border routers only on Thread 1.4[msh]. A badge on the box tells you the device speaks Matter; it doesn’t tell you which version your platform actually implements today.
How big is it?
Per The Verge’s Unify coverage, the CSA has certified more than 1,200 unique Matter products, has 940 member companies (about 300 actively working on the standard), and Matter now covers most mainstream device types, including — finally — security cameras[verge]. On the silicon side, the CSA’s Matter Compliant Platform Certification lets chip and SDK vendors pre-certify the foundations devices are built on[csaplat]. We don’t round these numbers or quote a market size here; estimates differ widely by analyst.
Why a specialist still matters
- Spec ≠ support. The device may be 1.6-ready while your platform behaves like 1.3[verge][msh]. Someone has to know which features actually work on your hub today.
- Thread needs a border router and a sane network. Thread 1.4 is now required for new border-router certification[msh]; mixed-generation hubs are a common source of “it dropped offline.”
- Multi-ecosystem commissioning. Joint Fabric is designed to make one home controllable by several platforms[csa16], but until platforms ship it, multi-admin setups are done device by device.
- Locks and cameras carry liability. A keypad code policy, battery plan and Wi-Fi dependence are install decisions, not app settings.
Who should hire install
- Homes split across Apple + Google/Alexa households.
- Anything security-related: locks, cameras, alarm integration.
- Whole-home lighting (more than a handful of switches, or line-voltage work).
- Thermostats on heat pumps, multi-zone or no-C-wire systems — see the thermostat comparison.
Small single-device swaps are usually fine to DIY; our hire-a-pro vs DIY checklist draws the line. If the smart-home work is part of a renovation with an electrician or GC, run the quote through HouseIQ QuoteCheck first.
FAQ
- Does Matter replace Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home?
- No. It bridges them — you still pick a platform (or several) to control things; Matter is how devices join.
- Is every Matter badge equal?
- No. Check the ecosystem’s own supported-features page and its date; platform versions lag the spec[verge].
- Do I need Thread?
- Only for Thread devices (many locks and sensors). Wi-Fi Matter devices don’t need a border router.
- Will my old devices become Matter?
- Some get firmware updates or bridges; many don’t. Check the manufacturer page for your exact model.
