Smart thermostats compared: Matter support, ecosystems and wiring

Three current models, compared only on what their makers state. No editor scores, no star ratings.

Who this is for

Most homes with a conventional forced-air furnace or AC can swap a thermostat in an afternoon. Heat pumps, dual-fuel, zoned systems and homes without a C wire are where mistakes get expensive — run the manufacturer’s compatibility checker before you buy, and treat those as pro jobs. For the average American household almost half the annual energy bill goes to heating and cooling — more than $900 a year — which is why ENERGY STAR maintains a certified smart-thermostat list[estar].

Rows come from the manufacturer product page linked in each row, fetched on the date shown. “Unknown” means the page did not state Matter support when we checked — it is not a “no.” We re-verify rows older than 90 days.

Hire a pro or DIY?

Green: standard forced-air, C wire present, single zone. Yellow: no C wire, or you’re not sure which wire is which. Red: heat pump with aux heat, dual-fuel, multi-zone, or any line-voltage (baseboard) system. Full checklist on the hire-pro vs DIY page. If the thermostat is part of an HVAC replacement quote, check that quote on HouseIQ before you sign.

Not sure what your wiring is?

Send a photo of the wall plate and tell us your system. We’ll say whether it’s a DIY swap or a pro visit.
